Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is a component of the Microsoft System Center suite of enterprise management software.

 SCOM allows data center administrators to deploy, configure, manage and monitor the operations, services, devices and applications of multiple enterprise IT systems through a single platform

SCOM is a monitoring and reporting tool that checks the status of various objects defined within the environment, such as server hardware, system services, operating systems (OS), hypervisors and applications.

Microsoft Operations Framework

 

The Microsoft Operations Framework is provides guidance on how to correctly manage multiple aspects of your IT environment.

This encompasses the entire lifecycle:

  • from designing it,
  • implementing it
  • until finally managing it.

The framework is divided into phases, with each phase containing so called ‘Service Management Function’. These SMF’s flesh out a specific process within the phase it resides in.

MOF and ITIL give you the goal to achieve success in IT environment à while SCOM give the tool to achieve that success : by monitoring and fixing issues before it happened
